Influence tools

“Influence tools” are principles and techniques that you use to drive success by influencing yourself and those around you in the direction that you want and need to go.

An important point here is that they are not all about influencing others: ensuring that you influence yourself in the right direction by developing awareness and the right attitude is just as much a part of them as influencing others.

I am using the “influence tools” from the book “Student to CEO” in order to structure the creation of content for this blog. The Student to CEO book contains “box-outs” with single-sentence sound bites that are entitled “influence tools”.

Most of the influence tools in the book are good common sense and the book provides some context around why they have been included, but does not explain them in detail or provide guidance on how to apply each one. That is where I had my idea.

I had not posted anything on this blog for a while and felt that just having something to give me a bit of inspiration and something specific to write about would be useful: and these influence tool sound bites provide the perfect prompts for me to create content that is useful. As the Student to CEO book does not provide detailed guidance on how to use these influence tools, that is exactly what I will do with my influence tool posts.

In order to create the posts, I have only used the title of the influence tool as it appears in the Student to CEO book for inspiration and have not dug into the book unless I could not work out what the author meant by the sentence. I have then used these sentences to write my views on what I think the influence tool means and provided guidance and templates on how I would implement them.

The key pieces of information that I have provided on each influence tool includes:
  • What? – what is the influence tool in a nutshell i.e. what does the sentence mean;
  • Why? – why would you want to apply this influence tool even if you knew what it is and how to apply it;
  • How? – guidance on what you need to do in order to implement the influence tool, including step-by-step instructions where appropriate;
  • An example – notes on how this influence tool applies to your life using an example;
  • An exercise – specific things you can do RIGHT NOW to apply the influence tool and see the benefits of it in action today.
The influence tools have been grouped in the same way that they have been grouped in the Student to CEO book, by chapter as outlined in the summary posts below:

  1. "Know Your Map" Influence Tools
  2. "Know What You Want" Influence Tools
  3. "Be Willing To Do It" Influence Tools
  4. "Be Passionate" Influence Tool
  5. "Believe You Can Do It" Influence Tools
  6. "Date To Be Different" Influence Tools
  7. "The Skill Of All Skills To Climb To The Top" Influence Tools
  8. "Do It In Service" Influence Tools
